Chris Whong is a brigade co-captain for BetaNYC in New York City. A self-described urbanist, mapmaker, and data junkie, he has a specific interest in data visualization and visual civic tech projects. His visualizations have been featured by leading technology publications including Fast Company and Popular Science, and more can be found at chriswhong.com. As a Data Solutions Architect for Socrata, Chris assists state and local governments in overcoming the technical hurdles of opening their data, and helps to build customized solutions. Prior to working at Socrata, Chris owned a small tech services business, and served as an Officer in the U.S. Army. Chris has a BS in Geographic Information Sciences from the University of Maryland and a Master's Degree in Urban Planning from New York University.
